Coachella awesome bands, cont’d

March 31, 2010

Wow, the festival is getting to be so close!! I finished going through the lineup investigating bands, so now I have some serious listening to do. Anyway, more fun bands I’ve discovered thus far:

little-dragon-machine-dreams

Little Dragon – A group from Sweden fronted by singer Yukimi Nagano. The songs on their new album Machine Dreams range from catchy, upbeat, synth-pop (“My Step”, “Looking Glass”) to light, lush dreams like “Feather”, to neo-soul tracks like “Never Never”. Overall a really nice, neat combo of styles into a slick new sound, for the most part very chill and atmospheric, with very distinct and affecting vocals. (Definitely going to be a good set!)

Plus, Little Dragon are featured in two songs from the new Gorillaz album, Plastic Beach. Would be more than willing to bet they’ll be joining them onstage at the festival!

Check out Little Dragon if you like Lykke Li, Sebastian Tellier, New Young Pony Club, Metric, Cibo Matto…. Here’s a shadow puppety video. And here are some songs.

Little Dragon – “Feather”

Little Dragon – “My Step”

hockeyband

HockeyPortland dance rock with attitude and a really good singer! Basically, if you hate hyper hipsters, STEER CLEAR. 😀 But seriously though, these guys are really fun. Some songs are a little bit funky, and sometimes a bit soul (seems to be a theme this year… Soulchella?? Not quite). The singer’s voice reminds me of the Arctic Monkeys singer mixed with Florence (of the Machine renown).

Check out Hockey if you like Late of the Pier, Natalie Portman’s Shaved Head, the Faint, Franz Ferdinand, the Arctic Monkeys/Kooks/Cribs/Wombats… maybe even Vampire Weekend, if they didn’t SUCK. BURRRN

Also here’s a pretty fun video!

Hockey – Learn to Lose

Hockey – Preacher

In order to cover more ground before the fest I might have to cram more bands into future such entries. Ah well. There are just soooo many damn great bands at the festival this year!!!!

Whoah, Barretso

February 25, 2010

I’ve been meaning to post about this since I first discovered, but I suck at posting and am good at being busy, so there you have it. BETTR LATE THAN NEVR.

barretso

Barretso is, to put it lightly, an electro wizard (from Chile). His EP ‘Bright City Lights’ is going to drop soon and man, I tell you… I have not yet heard one song or remix (either by him or of him) that did not rock my proverbial boat, HARD. Since the start of the year, the blogs have all been chiming in to sing his praises, and I’m sure not going to be the one that breaks that trend.

Sometimes different parts remind me of some of my other favorite electronic artists – the dark videogame dankness of Danger, the funky rolling beats of the Twelves, the relentless overdrive of MSTRKRFT… and sometimes the magical musical alchemy of my precious Miami Horror. It all makes for a truly delightful aural experience.

Barretso has burst onto the scene pretty damn hard and I think we’ll be seeing and hearing a lot more from him, which can only mean great things. (Plus, if Barretso and I got married, I would only have to add ‘-so’ to my last name, tee hee. Well, and ditch one of my T’s, if you want to be technical.)

Barretso – Midnight Walk

Barretso – We Won’t Stop (KOLT13 remix) – This one is my favorite. It’s a killer (in the good way)

Astro – Hongo Atomic (Barretso remix)

Check out Barretso on HypeM to hear even more fabulous songs and remixes.

Late of the Pier new video

February 24, 2010

Late of the Pier, a band that I initially dismissed and disliked as Klaxon-wannabes (based on the video for “Bathroom Gurgle” – still hate that song title, guys. haha. I don’t get the band name either, but ok let’s stay on target here). Gradually I came to really enjoy after giving their debut album, Fantasy Black Channel, a try.

Now they have a new song and video out, and it’s good. On both counts. I recommend full-screen for optimal fun 😉 I think this portends a good future for LOTP.

Caribou

February 8, 2010

caribou

Caribou, a band I was never quite sold on before, has totally snagged me now with their new single, “Odessa”. One of the most inventive and addictive “dance” songs I’ve ever heard. If I had to compare it to another band, I would probably say Röyksopp. Check the song out in this blog post! Can’t wait to hear what else is in store from them in the future.

EDIT: Okay, so listening to Caribou’s earlier material again, I realize I probably didn’t give them enough of a chance before. Just had to say that!!

Hot Chip

February 4, 2010

hotchip

…is still awesome. Their new album, One Life Stand, drops [officially… O;) ] on Feb 9th. It has some really great tracks. I am extreeeemely excited for their Coachella performance this year!! My favorite track from the album:

Hot Chip – We Have Love

I have been listening the hell out of this song, and loving it hard. I definitely feel like this album shows a progression of their sound that still sounds very much like Hot Chip, just… even better. 😀 The breakdown part in the middle is especially great. Can’t wait to go ballistic to this one.

Other singles can be heard on youtube here (neat video for it) and here (not actually a music video but good song).

Aeroplane

February 1, 2010

So, investigating all the bands/acts I am unfamiliar with from the Coachella lineup always proves to be fruitful in terms of finding some great new music, which I will begin to tell you about RIGHT NOW! There will surely be many more installments of this as we progress toward the festival, but I’ll kick it off with a look at Aeroplane.

aeroplane1

They are Belgian and people are apparently fond of describing them as “balearic”. If I hadn’t heard that term (or.. looked it up right now, ha) I would describe it as kind of chilled out spacey disco house. Which is to say I like it.

Now that they mention it though I guess it isn’t too hard to picture this being played in Ibiza…

Anyway, they have a number of singles out and quite a few great-to-amazing remixes, so feast your ears. This post in this really awesome blog has a ton of the best ones I’ve heard so far. I also just wanted to toss in another one I really enjoy 😉

Au Revoir Simone – Another Likely Story (Aeroplane remix)
